Optic Nerve Length before and after Spaceflight

چکیده

PurposeThe spaceflight-associated neuro–ocular syndrome (SANS) affects astronauts on missions to the International Space Station (ISS). The SANS has blurred vision and ocular changes as typical features. objective of this study was investigate if microgravity can create deformations or movements eye optic nerve, such could be linked SANS.DesignCohort study.ParticipantsTwenty-two (age 48 ± 4 years).MethodsThe intervention consisted time in at ISS. We co-registered pre- postspaceflight magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans generated centerline representations nerve. coordinates for nerve head (ONH) chiasm (OC) ends were recorded along with entire path.Main Outcome MeasuresOptic length, ONH movement, OC movement after microgravity.ResultsOptic length increased (0.80 0.74 mm, P < 0.001), primarily reflecting forward displacement (0.63 0.53 0.001). positively related mission duration, preflight body weight, clinical manifestations SANS. also detected upward (0.39 0.50 = 0.002), indicative brain but observation not SANS.ConclusionsThe spaceflight-induced lengthening anterior support that is caused by an altered pressure difference between eye, leading a push posterior eye. Body weight potential contributing risk factor. Direct assessment intracranial space required verify implicated mechanism behind findings Cohort study. Twenty-two years). path. Optic microgravity.

iTRAQ-based proteomics profiling of Schwann cells before and after peripheral nerve injury

Objective(s): Schwann cells (SCs) have a wide range of applications as seed cells in the treatment of nerve injury during transplantation. However, there has been no report yet on kinds of proteomics changes that occur in Schwann cells before and after peripheral nerve injury.Materials and Methods: Activated Schwann cells (ASCs) and normal Schwann cells (NSCs) were obtained from adult Wistar ra...

Effect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters

Background :There is not any data available about the effect of high bar pressure condition on intracranial pressure. In this study, the effect of diving on the optic nerve and sheath diameters as non-invasive markers of intracranial pressure has been investigated.   Methods : Twenty professional male divers from twenty one volunteers were chosen for this cross-sectional study. Only one perso...

Time course profiling of the retinal transcriptome after optic nerve transection and optic nerve crush

PURPOSE A time-course analysis of gene regulation in the adult rat retina after intraorbital nerve crush (IONC) and intraorbital nerve transection (IONT). METHODS RNA was extracted from adult rat retinas undergoing either IONT or IONC at increasing times post-lesion. Affymetrix RAE230.2 arrays were hybridized and analyzed. Statistically regulated genes were annotated and functionally clustere...

Obtaining maximal optic nerve length during enucleation procedures.

OBJECTIVE To determine optimal scissor blade design and surgical approach to facilitate obtaining a long optic nerve segment during enucleation procedures. METHODS Two hundred mock enucleations were performed with the use of a human child skull model and a silicone sphere to simulate an eye. Temporal and nasal approaches with scissor blades with noncurved, mildly curved, or strongly curved bl...

Calcium metabolism before, during, and after a 3-mo spaceflight: kinetic and biochemical changes.

The loss of bone during spaceflight is considered a physiological obstacle for the exploration of other planets. This report of calcium metabolism before, during, and after long-duration spaceflight extends results from Skylab missions in the 1970s. Biochemical and endocrine indexes of calcium and bone metabolism were measured together with calcium absorption, excretion, and bone turnover using...
